May the force be with you

It started innocently enough. Earlier this year, my cousin gave us the complete digitally remastered Star Wars in a 6-dvd set. What we didn't expect was that it would spark off a Star Wars frenzy in Andre, to the extent that it dethroned even his beloved Lord of the Rings. Almost all of his daily tv quota thus far has been dedicated to reliving Star Wars episodes 1-6 in turn.

Every other day, I'll hear emanating from the screen, the original, ultimate climatic scene, which Andre loves to ham up:

Luke Skywalker: You killed my father.

Darth Vader: No (heavy breathing). I am your father.

Luke Skywalker: Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!

I was not a Star Wars fan growing up but I can see why it's every boy's fantasy. Flying, fighting machines, sleek robots, oozy, slimy creatures and of course, the fabulously cool light sabres.

I don't allow the purchase of any toy weapons in our home so Andre decided to fashion his own light sabre, using an empty shuttlecock tube and a part from a kids' basketball game set. Quite ingenious, I thought!

Last week, I found him recreating scenes from the Star Wars movies using Kenneth's stack of flip chart paper and coloured markers.

This is Attack of the Clones:

A New Hope:

Some close ups of key characters:

Alamak, somebody needs to work on his spelling.

Star Wars has its unexpected side benefits. Andre is always lamenting over his diminutive stature but recently, he told me, "Now I feel better about being small."

"Why is that?"

"Yoda is small but he's the wisest and most powerful."

The truth you speak, my young Padawan.

"Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you?" - Yoda (The Empire Strikes Back)

Yoda is small but he's the wisest and most powerful.~ that's a wonderful insight!!!
I love it when the kids "repeat" the lines from their favorite movies. Mine would be HP (for both) and all the Super Heroes movies (for ds). They knew what they were going to say next!
Love the drawings too. Such patience!

S: Repeating lines from movies - I know what you mean! If only my kids could apply such superior memory prowess in school LOL. Sorry for my sotong-ness, what's HP??

I miss reading your blog & the first entry already has me smiling. Andre is too adorable.

What is it with the quote
"I am your father" that has kids repeating over & over again ?

Mei: And I missed hearing from you!

Maybe it's in anticipation of the delicious "nooooooooooooooo" that follows? LOL! I know it has been spoofed many times, my kids love the version in Toy Story too where Buzz Lightyear goes "nooooooooooooooo!!"

I can totally identify with this phase. The 3 males in my family are Star Wars mad. My older boy was bitten by the bug in K2 and is still totally mad about it. He collects Star Wars lego only and we now have a special cupboard to display all of them. We have the same rule about no toy weapons and yes, we had lots of light sabres made out of toilet paper rolls, foam, aluminium foil etc all over the house too. For his 13th birthday, Daddy bought a cheap plastic dustbin and made a R2D2 out of it. They are now planning how to construct a LAAT-i gunship from an IKEA bunkbed for when we move house!

Anyway, you can try introducing Andre to the whole series of Star Wars books by Lucas books (published by Scholastic). They are not the best in terms of literary value but they will get him to start to love reading.

May the force be with you!

Elan: R2D2 from a dustbin? How creative! If Andre hears about your son's Star Wars lego collection, I'm sure he'll try to wrangle a visit - sounds like a boy's dream come true :P

Thanks for the rec re: the books, I'll try hunting them down the next time we visit the library.
